Clean Power 2030 and Great British Energy: What They Mean for Jobs
A neutral explainer on the UK's Clean Power 2030 plan, Great British Energy and the Clean Energy Jobs Plan, and what they could mean for energy jobs and skills.
Bridgwater is the nearest town to Hinkley Point C, the nuclear power station being built on the west Somerset coast, and much of the project's training, accommodation and supply chain is based here. Search nuclear, construction and engineering vacancies around Bridgwater and the M5 corridor, and apply free.

For most people looking for energy work in Bridgwater, everything starts with Hinkley Point. The headland on the coast west of the town has hosted nuclear power stations for decades, and it is now the site of Hinkley Point C: two EPR reactors being built by NNB Generation Company, an EDF-led business in which China General Nuclear holds a minority stake.
Hinkley Point C is one of the biggest construction projects in the UK, and it has reshaped the local job market. Civil engineering, mechanical and electrical installation, logistics, security, catering and site services all recruit through the project and its contractors. As the build progresses, demand is moving towards electrical, mechanical, commissioning and control and instrumentation work, and EDF is also hiring the people who will operate the station.
Next door, the older stations are being decommissioned. Hinkley Point B stopped generating in 2022 and, once its fuel had been removed, passed to Nuclear Restoration Services, part of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority group. The Magnox station, Hinkley Point A, is also being decommissioned. That work creates long-running roles in waste management, radiological protection, safety case writing and demolition planning.
A few miles north-east of Bridgwater, the Gravity smart campus near Puriton, on the site of a former Royal Ordnance Factory, is home to Agratas, the Tata group's battery business. It is building a large electric vehicle battery cell factory there in phases. A plant of that kind needs process engineers, maintenance technicians, quality specialists and facilities staff once it moves into production.
In the town itself, the Somerset Energy Innovation Centre supports clean energy and low-carbon businesses. It began as a base to help small firms join the Hinkley Point C supply chain, and the wider campus aims to build a low-carbon energy cluster in the South West.
Bridgwater's position on the M5, between Bristol and Taunton, also suits fabrication, logistics and distribution firms that serve energy projects across the region.
Steel fixers, formworkers, scaffolders, plant operators and lifting supervisors are needed on major sites, alongside welders, pipefitters, electricians and HVAC installers. Nuclear welding and pipework call for coded qualifications and careful records, so expect testing before you start.
Look for commissioning engineers, control and instrumentation technicians, mechanical and electrical design engineers and trainee operators. Operations roles at a nuclear station involve long training programmes and security vetting, which employers usually explain in the advert.
Nuclear projects rely on quality inspectors, document controllers, planners, cost engineers, health and safety advisers and environmental specialists. These posts suit people from defence, rail, oil and gas or other regulated industries.
Bridgwater & Taunton College has worked closely with the Hinkley Point C project. Its Bridgwater campus hosts a Welding Centre of Excellence set up to train welders for the project, and Hinkley-linked training centres have also been set up for electrical skills in Bridgwater and for construction and mechanical skills, including pipefitting and steel erection, at Cannington. The college's Energy Skills Centre also covers power plant construction and nuclear decommissioning, and you can browse courses on the Bridgwater & Taunton College site.
EDF offers apprenticeships through Hinkley Point C and runs Young HPC, which gives 16 to 21-year-olds careers advice and a possible fast track onto the project. University Centre Somerset, part of the college, runs higher-level courses in Taunton.
Car parking at Hinkley Point C is very limited, so almost all workers travel by bus. Park and ride sites operate at Junction 23 of the M5, south of Cannington and west of Williton, and dedicated buses also collect workers from towns and villages. Early starts and long shifts are normal, so find your nearest pick-up point before you accept an offer.
If you are moving to the area, rooms are available at the purpose-built worker campuses on the Hinkley site and in Bridgwater. Bridgwater station, on the Great Western Railway line between Bristol and Taunton, has regular trains to Bristol Temple Meads and Taunton, which helps if you live along that corridor.
Use our energy job search with Bridgwater, Cannington or Taunton in the location field, then filter by permanent, contract or temporary work. Contract roles are common on large nuclear projects, so the contract filter is worth trying.
Read our overview of nuclear industry jobs, and if battery manufacturing interests you, the energy storage and EV sector page explains the main roles. To be found by recruiters, register as a candidate and list your tickets, qualifications and any security clearance on your CV. Similar work exists at other nuclear sites, including Wylfa on Anglesey, and across the Bristol Channel at Pembrokeshire's energy port.
Parking on site is very limited, so almost everyone travels by bus. There are park and ride sites at Junction 23 of the M5, south of Cannington and west of Williton, plus dedicated buses that run through local towns and villages. Ask your employer which pick-up point and shift times apply to you.
Bridgwater & Taunton College hosts a Welding Centre of Excellence on its Bridgwater campus, set up to train welders for Hinkley Point C. Contractors will still test you against their own welding procedures before you start, so keep your certificates and records to hand.
Purpose-built worker campuses on the Hinkley site and in Bridgwater offer short and long-term rooms. The project also runs an accommodation office that can help with other options. Many workers rent privately in Bridgwater, Burnham-on-Sea or Taunton.
Yes. Decommissioning continues at Hinkley Point A and B, and Agratas is building an electric vehicle battery cell factory at the Gravity campus near Puriton. Low-carbon businesses linked to the Somerset Energy Innovation Centre and M5 logistics firms also recruit.
Most roles on licensed nuclear sites need pre-employment security checks, and some need higher-level vetting. Checks can take several weeks, so have your ID, address history and employment history ready. Adverts usually say what level of clearance is required.
