Clean Power 2030 and Great British Energy: What They Mean for Jobs
A neutral explainer on the UK's Clean Power 2030 plan, Great British Energy and the Clean Energy Jobs Plan, and what they could mean for energy jobs and skills.
Whitehaven is the main town serving the Sellafield nuclear site and the wider West Cumbria nuclear cluster, which runs from Workington down to Seascale. Use this page to find nuclear, engineering and support roles along the Cumbrian coast, with practical notes on security vetting, training and travelling to site.
Adverts are checked and published as employers join. Create a free profile and switch on employer search so local employers can find you.
Few parts of the UK depend on one industry as much as West Cumbria depends on nuclear. Sellafield, a few miles south of Whitehaven near Seascale, is owned by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) and run by Sellafield Ltd. Its work centres on decommissioning old plants, retrieving and treating legacy waste and storing nuclear materials safely, a task that will last for generations.
Because that work is long-term and tightly regulated, it supports a deep local supply chain of engineering firms, specialist contractors, consultancies and training providers. It is common for people in Whitehaven, Egremont or Cleator Moor to work for several of these employers over a career without leaving the area.
| Location | What you will find there |
|---|---|
| Sellafield, near Seascale | The main nuclear site: operations, decommissioning, waste management, engineering and site services |
| Whitehaven town centre | Sellafield Ltd offices at Albion Square, plus contractor and consultancy offices |
| Westlakes Science Park, Moor Row | The NDA's headquarters and further Sellafield Ltd offices |
| Near Drigg | The Low Level Waste Repository, run by Nuclear Waste Services |
| Workington and Lillyhall | The National Nuclear Laboratory's Workington laboratory, Lakes College, training centres and engineering firms |
Not everything is nuclear. The Port of Workington is the operations base for the Robin Rigg offshore wind farm in the Solway Firth, and the regional electricity and water networks employ field staff across the county. A large network of smaller businesses also supplies fabrication, scaffolding, radiation protection, IT, security and facilities management, and these firms often advertise contract roles that can lead to permanent posts.
Process operators, mechanical and electrical technicians, control and instrumentation technicians and maintenance planners keep plants running safely. Many of these roles follow shift patterns and need strong knowledge of permits, isolations and safe systems of work.
Decommissioning creates steady demand for mechanical, electrical, civil and structural design engineers, alongside project managers, planners, cost engineers and commercial specialists. Experience on other regulated sites, such as defence, chemicals or offshore oil and gas, is often accepted.
Radiation protection advisers and monitors, safety case authors, chemists, environmental specialists and waste management engineers form a large part of the skilled workforce. Graduates in physics, chemistry and engineering are recruited into these teams every year.
Security officers, IT staff, procurement, finance, HR and administrators support the technical teams. These are a realistic way in if you live locally but do not have an engineering background.
Most jobs on licensed nuclear sites, and many office roles supporting them, need security clearance before you start. You may be asked for several years of address, employment and identity history, and some posts need higher-level clearance that takes longer to process. Keep your documents ready and be honest about gaps, because vetting delays are a common reason start dates slip.
Lakes College at Lillyhall, between Workington and Whitehaven, hosts the northern hub of the National College for Nuclear and offers engineering courses, apprenticeships and higher-level qualifications. Gen2, an engineering and technology training provider, runs skills centres at Lillyhall and at Energus, the West Cumbria training and conference centre that also promotes the NDA group graduate programme.
For research and postgraduate study, the University of Manchester's Dalton Nuclear Institute has a facility in Cumbria, and UCLan and the University of Cumbria are both active on the coast. Apprenticeships remain one of the most common ways into the industry here, from craft and technician schemes to degree apprenticeships.
The A595 runs through Whitehaven and past Egremont, with junctions near Calder Bridge giving access to Sellafield. The Cumbrian Coast line, run by Northern, links Whitehaven, Corkickle, St Bees, Sellafield and Seascale, with Workington and Carlisle to the north and Barrow-in-Furness to the south. Trains are far less frequent than in a city, so check timings against your shift before relying on rail.
Site roles often involve early starts, shifts or compressed working weeks, while office roles in Whitehaven or at Westlakes may offer some hybrid working. Ask at interview about parking, induction time and how long it takes to get from the gatehouse to your workplace, which can add up on a large site.
Search current energy job adverts by keyword, such as radiation protection or decommissioning, and add Whitehaven, Egremont or Workington as the location. Filter by salary, contract type and on-site or hybrid working. Our guide to nuclear jobs explains the main role types and qualifications, and the candidate guide to CVs and applications covers how to present regulated-site experience. For official background on the site operator, see Sellafield Ltd on GOV.UK.
Barrow-in-Furness shares much of the same supply chain, so look at roles around Barrow and Furness if you can travel south. When you are ready, register as a candidate for free, upload your CV and decide whether verified employers can find your profile. Energy Jobs Board is independent: adverts come from employers and recruitment agencies, and every one is checked by our team before it is published.
Almost all roles on the Sellafield site need security clearance, and many off-site roles supporting it do too. Employers usually start the process after making an offer, and it can take several weeks, longer for higher-level clearance. Having your address, employment and identity documents ready helps avoid delays.
Yes. Sellafield has its own station on the Cumbrian Coast line, which also serves Whitehaven, Corkickle, St Bees and Seascale. Services are infrequent, so check Northern's current timetable against your shift times before you rely on the train.
It is a nuclear skills facility based at Lakes College, Lillyhall, between Workington and Whitehaven. It supports technical and higher-level training for the nuclear industry, and is a good place to ask about apprenticeships and courses that lead to site roles.
Some. The Port of Workington is the operations base for the Robin Rigg offshore wind farm, and the regional electricity and water networks employ engineers and field staff. Many supply-chain firms also work across nuclear, energy and manufacturing, so your skills can move between them.
It often is. Engineering trades, nuclear propulsion experience, security roles and familiarity with strict procedures and vetting all transfer well to nuclear decommissioning. Highlight qualifications, safety training and any clearance history clearly on your CV.
