Clean Power 2030 and Great British Energy: What They Mean for Jobs
A neutral explainer on the UK's Clean Power 2030 plan, Great British Energy and the Clean Energy Jobs Plan, and what they could mean for energy jobs and skills.
Grimsby is one of the UK's main bases for maintaining offshore wind farms, while nearby Immingham and Killingholme support refining, fuel handling and heavy industry. Search energy jobs across Grimsby, Immingham, Cleethorpes and the south Humber bank.

Grimsby and its neighbour Immingham sit on the south bank of the Humber in North East Lincolnshire. Together their docks form one of the busiest port complexes in the UK, and Grimsby has become a leading base for operating and maintaining offshore wind farms in the southern North Sea. A few miles up the estuary, refining, fuel handling and heavy industry give the Humber Bank a second, long-established energy workforce.
If you are looking for work here, that split matters. Grimsby is strongest for wind operations and maintenance, while Immingham and the surrounding villages lean towards process plants, refining and port logistics. Many people move between the two over a career.
Ørsted's East Coast Hub at the port in Grimsby is its operations and maintenance centre for wind farms off the Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Norfolk coasts, including the Hornsea projects, Race Bank and Westermost Rough. It houses a marine and helicopter coordination centre that tracks vessels, aircraft and technicians around the clock. Other wind farm operators and service companies have also set up bases around the Royal Dock and the fish docks.
Operations and maintenance work is steadier than construction, because wind farms need servicing for decades once built. Teams include wind turbine technicians, crew transfer vessel skippers and crew, marine coordinators, maintenance planners, HV engineers, stores and warehouse staff, and health and safety advisers.
Phillips 66's Humber Refinery at South Killingholme turns crude oil into petrol and other fuels. The Port of Immingham, run by Associated British Ports, handles oil, LPG and biomass, including wood pellets shipped on to Drax power station. These sites rely on process technicians, mechanical and E&I maintenance staff, inspection engineers and control room operators, and planned shutdowns bring short bursts of contract work for fitters, scaffolders and riggers.
The Humber also forms part of the East Coast Cluster for carbon capture, and a pipeline to carry carbon dioxide from Humber industry to offshore storage is in development. Timings depend on future funding decisions, so treat carbon capture and hydrogen as a growing area rather than a guaranteed source of jobs right now.
Technicians who can fault-find on electrical, hydraulic and mechanical systems are in steady demand. Most O&M roles are based on a daily transfer from port, so you go out in the morning and return the same day, weather permitting. Planners, marine coordinators and HV engineers support the offshore teams from the shore.
Refinery and terminal operators work rotating shifts and need a strong grasp of permits, isolations and process safety. Maintenance technicians and inspection engineers are often recruited both directly and through contractors who hold long-term site agreements.
The ports employ marine pilots, crane and plant operators, logistics coordinators and engineering staff. Vessel operators that serve the wind industry hire deckhands, engineers and masters with the right maritime certificates.
The Grimsby Institute, part of TEC Partnership, has its main campus at Nuns Corner and a branch site in Immingham. It offers further education, apprenticeships and higher education through University Centre Grimsby, so you can progress from a first technical qualification to degree level without leaving the area.
At Stallingborough, between Grimsby and Immingham, CATCH is an industry-led training centre for the process, energy and engineering industries. It has a live three-storey process plant with a control room, a confined space training area and engineering workshops, and it runs apprenticeships in process, maintenance, welding and pipefitting. Wind employers usually ask for GWO Basic Safety Training on top of your trade qualifications.
The A180 runs from Grimsby past Stallingborough and Immingham to the M180, which joins the wider motorway network towards Doncaster and Scunthorpe. TransPennine Express trains run hourly from Cleethorpes through Grimsby Town to Sheffield, Manchester and Liverpool, and East Midlands Railway serves Lincoln and Barton-upon-Humber. Humberside Airport is near Kirmington, and the Humber Bridge links the south bank with Hull.
Vessel crews and technicians often start early to make the most of daylight and tides, so living close to the docks helps. Refinery and port sites around Killingholme are easiest to reach by car or shared transport.
Across the estuary, there are more opportunities in manufacturing and chemicals, so look at jobs on the north bank in Hull too.
It helps, because crew transfer vessels usually leave early in the morning. Many technicians live in Grimsby, Cleethorpes, Waltham or Humberston for a short commute to the docks. If you live further away, check the start time and rota before applying.
Most employers want a recognised electrical or mechanical qualification, plus GWO Basic Safety Training and an offshore medical. Some operators run their own technician training schemes for career changers and service leavers. Experience in maintenance from another industry counts for a lot.
Operations roles usually are, with rotating day and night shifts. Many maintenance jobs follow day patterns, with extra hours during planned shutdowns. The advert should explain the shift system and any allowances.
Yes. CATCH at Stallingborough runs process and engineering courses on a live training plant, and Grimsby Institute offers apprenticeships and technical qualifications. Some employers also take on trainees directly and pay for their training.
Drive over the Humber Bridge and take the A15 and A180, allowing for the bridge toll. Public transport is possible but slower, so many people car-share for shift work.

Offshore wind operations and maintenance dominates, with technicians, vessel crew, marine coordinators and planners. Around Immingham, refinery, terminal and port jobs add process, maintenance and logistics roles.
Few employers are based in Cleethorpes itself, but it is a short trip from Grimsby docks and Immingham, so many people who work in the industry live there. Search by Grimsby and Immingham as well as Cleethorpes.
Yes. Electricians, mechanical fitters, mariners and ex-forces technicians often move into wind and process roles. Highlight your transferable skills and any safety training you already hold.
